How To Get Through Midterms

Midterms can be stressful especially if you find yourself cramming last minute. To avoid any extra stress and getting through midterms with a little more ease, the trick is to find a plan of action and a study method that works for you.

Before midterms, or any exam really, you should ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Do you have all your study aids? Make sure you have all your study guides, notes, flashcards and any extra study materials before the week of midterms.   2. Where do you study the best? Everyone studies better in different environments. Some people need to be in the stacks of the library while some study best at a local coffee shop or at the student union. When choosing a place to study, be sure to pick a place where you’re least likely to be distracted and can really get some studying done.
  3. Have you disabled your social media accounts? In all seriousness, this is probably a good idea. Countless hours of “studying time” is always wasted away because students
  4. When is your midterm? Be sure to know the dates and times of all your upcoming midterms. This will help devise a plan of action which will allow you to figure out how much time you realistically have to study for each course.
  5. Are you getting enough sleep? Yes, even during exams, it’s crucial that you get enough sleep. Relying on all nighters isn’t always the best idea. Keep in mind that there’s only so much information you can retain after hours.
  6. What have you eaten today? Your body needs fuel to function. Be sure to stay hydrated during exams and eat for energy (i.e. dried fruit nuggets). Right before exams, you should always get a good breakfast in, which can include eggs, toast with jam and/or oatmeal.
  7. How well do you know the material? If you understand a set of information, you should spend more time on the material you need the most help in.
  8. What material do you need the most help in? If you’re struggle on a concept or any sort of material that was previously covered, you should allocate more time on that set of information.
  9. Are there any study groups or tutoring sessions you can attend? It’s always a good idea to reach out to your peers for help.   10. Are you prepared for your midterm(s)? The answer is YES, you are! You have taken all the steps necessary to prepare for your upcoming midterm(s). You allocated enough time to each course and you’ve utilized all your study aids and sources. Remember to get a good nights sleep for your midterm and to make time for a healthy breakfast, even if you have take it on the go.
