While college can probably go down as the best 4 or 5 years of your life, when it comes to post graduation, it’s time to put your college years behind you and clean it up a bit. What we mean is, it’s time to spruce up your resume, social media profiles and anything else that could hinder your chances at landing an awesome career opportunity.
Here are some things to consider when preparing for life post college:
- Resume: If you haven’t tackled your resume already, what are you waiting for? It’s time to update your resume with all the important facts and also get creative! Philippe Dubost is a great example on how creative you can get with your resume. Philippe “sold” himself by turning his resume into an Amazon.com product page.
- Social Media: Logon to your Facebook page and alter your privacy settings. Strongly consider what photo albums and pieces of content displayed on your timeline you would want potential and/or future employers to see. Embarrassing and not so professional pictures could hinder your chances of landing your dream job. Also note that if your Twitter profile isn’t something you’d want your parents to stumble upon, make your profile private or delete it. You’ll thank us later.
- Google Search: Ever google your name? If you haven’t, you should. Anything that is remotely embarrassing should be removed. Contact the host of anything that could be detrimental to your chances of getting hired.
- Linkedin: Although this should fall under social media, Linkedin is viewed as a professional network, so there shouldn’t be much to alter or change here. However, you should update your profile and bring it current. Your profile picture should also be a professional. A lot of employers will check your Linkedin profile, so here’s a great place to store all your major details including your skills, group affiliations and honors/awards.
- Emails: When applying for a job after college, it’s important to have a professional email address. PrincessForever@____.com isn’t going to reflect any sort of professionalism, so stick to something consisting of your first and last name to be safe. Your new email address should also include a signature block which is placed at the end of your emails. Your signature block should include: first and last name, school + year as well as a phone number. Also, if you have purchased your own domain online, that includes your resume, or maybe a website you have been working on (that you would like a potential employer to see), feel free to include that in your signature block as well.
