A year after the Boston Marathon bombing, it was amazing to see survivors defiant and resilient more than ever. For most of the 36,000 runners this year, it wasn’t about competition at all, it was about unity and finishing together.
This year the 2014 Boston Marathon gained 9,000+ more runners than last year.
As the race started this year, the announcer shouted “Take back that finish line!”
In more good news, an American won the men’s division for the first time in more than 3 decades. Meb Keflizighi, a former New York City Marathon champion and Olympic medalist, won the men’s title in 2 hours, 8 minutes and 37 seconds.
Taking the title for the women’s division was Rita Jeptoo, of Kenya.
Later in the day, every non-competing runner crossed the every same finish line as Meb Keflizighi and Rita Jeptoo and triumphantly completed the marathon but with more personal goals rather than professional. Many ran for those who couldn’t.
Meb Keflezighi and Rita Jeptoo may have been the winners of the Boston Marathon for 2014, but the marathon has always been more about community and unity rather than a podium.
Every runner and spectator this year has proven today that we are #BostonStrong.
