Reaching Out To Your New College Roommate

Before you start your new semester at college, it’s always a good idea to reach out to your assigned roommate, especially if you don’t know them. Take a couple of weeks and get to know them the best you can via email, Facebook, phone conversations, texts and possible meet ups.

When you first get your roommate assignment, don’t be afraid to send over a quick Facebook or email message introducing yourself. It’s always a great idea to ask to speak over the phone in the message as well.

If you’re not sure what you should talk about, feel free to talk about the following:

  • What you did this summer
  • What you are currently up to
  • Where you live and basic facts about yourself
  • What your interests are
  • What college experiences you’re excited for
  • What sports or clubs you took part in high school
  • What major you plan to declare while in college

After you’ve covered some of those topics, it’s important to talk about who should bring what on move-in day. Here are some items you should consider bringing:

If you happen to live close to your new roommate, it doesn’t hurt to meet up a few times before the official move-in day. You can always go shopping together for your dorm room essentials and possibly coordinate!

If you’re stumped for social activities to bond with your roommate, try something like going to a carnival or grabbing lunch together. Attempts like this will make move-in day a breeze and less stressful because you will already have the comfort of knowing your dorm room buddy.

When communicating with your new roommate, feel free to talk about possible student groups you are considering joining and any other possible interests. Also, do not hesitate to talk about your pet peeves and weird habits you may have. After all, you will be living with this person and you both will encounter the positives and negatives of each other firsthand.

For some people, roommates just end up being roommates and for others, a roommate ends up being a best friend. Figure out what happens in your case, either way it’s best to try and get to know your roommate as best as you can.
