How to Make the Most of Your Freshman Year Orientation

Before every college academic year, you can expect to go to something called Freshman or Student Orientation. Freshman Orientation is generally a welcome week or weekend for all new incoming students. This time is used to inform students what they can expect within their college career. You can also expect informative sessions, social events, a tour of the campus and a ton of ice breaker games.

With that said, this is the perfect opportunity to socialize with people who are just as fearful and excited as you. To make sure you get the most out of your freshman year orientation, Flashnotes.com put together some key points to consider.

What You Can Expect:

  • Learn about all the campus resources available to you.
  • Learn about academic expectations.
  • Meet with academic advisors and register for courses.
  • Take photo for your student identification card.
  • Meet other incoming freshman.
  • An overnight stay in a campus residence hall (depending upon university or college).

How to Make the Most of Your Experience:

  • Takes notes about all the available campus resources. With all sorts of new information coming your way on Freshman Orientation, it’s impossible to remember all the resources available to you, so do yourself the favor and take some short-handed notes.
  • Take a look at sample class schedules. Look up ideal class schedules for a freshman with the specific major (at your school) you have in mind. If you’re not set on a major, look up class schedules for students who are undecided. This will give you a head start and something to talk about the academic advisor you will be meeting with.
  • Look your best. Chances are you’re going to be taking your photo for your student id. Make sure to look presentable because you’re going to have to commit to that picture for the next 4-5 years.
  • Put your best foot forward. This is your first opportunity to make new friends at your new school, so make every point to socialize and meet as many new people as you can. Don’t be afraid to exchange numbers and friend each other on Facebook or Twitter.
