Moving out of your parents’ house and into your own apartment or dorm room for the first time can be daunting. As you take your first steps onto campus as a freshman, you’ll have more freedom than you’ve ever had before, but at times can feel more lost than ever. Here’s our guide to starting freshman year prepared to take on everything campus life has to offer.
Dorm Living
Number one: laundry! Your mom isn’t going to be helping you out anymore so before you leave make sure someone teaches you the basics (i.e. separating colors and materials). This will save you a lot of stress and more importantly it will save your clothes! Another important thing to think about is food. You’re not always going to feel like walking to the dining hall so make sure you consider buying some microwavable foods and a good assortment of snacks to keep in your room.

Time Management
One of the most exciting parts of college is the freedom. While it’s a great thing to have, remember that your parents aren’t going to be reminding you to do your homework anymore. Don’t wait until the day before an essay or project is due to start. Try making schedules and lists to break up your time and ensure that you never feel too overwhelmed.

Having Fun
There are plenty of ways to have fun at college besides partying. Not that there’s anything wrong with going to parties, but your favorite memories will probably be the nights you stay in your dorm and have pajama movie-marathons with a group of close friends.

Staying Healthy
Don’t be surprised if you catch a cold your first semester. Your body’s not going to be used to being in such close quarters with so many other peoples’ germs. If it happens- just be prepared to fight through it. Skipping class is going to be tempting. Some good ways to prevent getting sick are exercise, eating well rounded meals, and drinking lots of water. Exercising doesn’t only keep your body healthy but will also help your mood!

Getting Around
Most college freshmen don’t bring a car with them. Your school typically provides some kind of shuttle service to get around, and off, campus. If you go to school in a city then you have plenty of public transportation to get you places and you’ll get comfortable finding your way around in no time!
